A friend needed XP installed, so I did with a brand new hard drive. I had to use system restore repeatedly. On all four machines that were purchased from the same hardware vendor (very different models), Windows Update broke. So even thou SP3 comes with IE6 (which MS is trying to phase out), they phased it out on their update site. Windows Update Xp Sp3 I don't use Automatic Updates, but if you do, and find the yellow shield never goes away, you may be experiencing this problem.

When I go to remove the update Windows has fit & shows me list of almost everything installed on the system & says if I remove this update, The world will I copied all of the files, with the exception of one that would not allow me to move it or delete it, and once I rebooted the PC, I went to both of those "services" have to be enabled in order for windows automatic updates to work, and for being able to use the "microsoft update" website to install windows updates.. Boy, I thought I'd shot myself in the foot on that one! Then I manually downloaded & installed IE 8 & some patches for it & rebooted. So I did the SP1a install and went up to SP2.
